Stereo Sound

submitted by Someone

This happened when I was still in primary school about 17 years back. At that time it was still known as Telok Kurau East School. Now the school is known as Telok Kurau Primary School. If I remember correctly I was in primary four at that time. Anyway the story have got nothing to do with the school, but more on the kampung within that area. Anyways...being a rather sickly child, I was never involve in much ECAs except library duties...(bluh!), and it so happened that my library duties is always on Thursday afternoon and normally knock off at about 4.30pm. So since my parents home is away at Kallang Bahru, the arrangement was that I would have to stay at my aunties'place on every thursday nite as it was located at Lorong K, which I would say was just a walking distance away.

So at nite, one of my aunties would actually sleep with me at the living room at the front part of the house. Since it was a Wooden Kampung style, the top portion of the walls are all covered only with wire mash, which means I could see outside and that any sound from outside could easily and clearly be heard from inside. And being the most front portion of the house, it was also the nearest to all big trees that was at the garden. I remember we had this huge Nangka trees and Jambu Ayer Tree on the right side of the house and on the left side are big mango trees, as well as Jambu Mawar tree.

The funny thing was at about 5.am or so, I was awaken by this sound of a woman singing. It sounded so sweet yet haunting stereo sound that seemed to go straight into my ear and into my brain. It sounded like a woman humming to herself in a ghostly way. It was really out of the world kind of voice! It went on for a few minutes until I could hear in a distance the sound of the morning prayers from a nearby mosque. The singing abruptly stopped! At first I thought it was just my imagination, so the next day I asked my aunt what it was. She shrugged it off saying that it was the sound of one of the neighbours singing in the morning or it could be the stereo...I was thinking...come on makcik...I may be a kid, but I know what I heard! But I pretended to believe her anyways.

So every week I found myself hearing the same thing again and again. At the same time, the same place, the same voice, the same song and it would always stop once the morning prayers start. So I knew then that it WAS definitely THAT thing singing to itself every nite at one of the trees. I never again relate this story to my aunt, but when i moved house to Ubi, and my Aunt by then had moved to Simei, I relate this experience to my sis. At that time, I was already in the Polytechnics. When I told her this story, she just stared at me in disbelief. I asked her why...she told me the exact thing happened to her when she was in primary school and staying with my aunties. She even told me how the song sounded and what time she woke up and exactly when the song would stop. Bear in mind, my sis is 6 years my senior, and she heard the THING before I even started primary school. So apparently IT had happened waaay back before my time....

Till today, my sis and I can still remember that haunting humming voice...and each time we think about it, we get goosebumps all over our body. So for those staying at Telok Kurau Lorong K...beware...cos this plot of land had been developed into a private housing...and it is pretty close to the canal leading to East Coast...
