This is a personal experience of mine. Before I proceed with the story I would like to declare that I didn't use drugs or alchohol for a decent length of time prior to the event happening. For a long time I have been trying to come to terms with what I actually saw and experienced that night. We had a platoon level night training exercise and got back before midnight. As per normal we clean arms and prepared to send them into the Armskote. That was when it happened. As I was clening my weapon I suddenly saw this strange red glow descend on everybody around me and the buildings as well. Simulateously I heard a strange crickety sound ( if you ever catch cuttlefish, you will find exactly the same sound when they are lifted out of the sea) aand the entire platoon excluding me started speaking in a weird tongue. I am familiar with what dialects sound like and no they certainly were not speaking in dialect. No I was not too bombed out to imagine it happening.
A good 2 minutes did it last. I have tried to rationalise where the red glow came from. At that point in time there were no helicopters flying overhead which would shine any lights on us at all. Even less so for a jet or turboprop. Certainly the main lighting in the nearby buildings were not red. I had wanted to demand an explanation from the others but obviously how do I walk up to the sergeants and demand what they were talking about for that brief moment. To now it is a great mystery.
