This is about a house I shared with a friend, back in the early 80's. We lived there a whole 2 months, before she was too freaked out to stay! It was a large old house, near the ocean. We rented it from a lady she knew, and couldn't believe how cheap the rent was, for such a great house. (First clue!)
Anyway, the first sign anything was amiss, was one morning we came downstairs and the cord to the washing machine was unplugged, lying acroos the top of the washer. We both asked if the other had done it (no), so checked the doors and windows to make sure everything was locked, then just plugged it back in, and forgot about it. Next morning, same thing. This spooked us (pardon the pun), so we checked the house thoroughly, but no sign of an intruder.
That night as we sat in the dining room, we heard furniture moving on the upstairs enclosed porch. We both froze, but it continued, so we snuck up the stairs quietly, and as we got to the top, it stopped. We ran to the porch, threw open the door, but nothing had been moved.
Anyway, back to the dining room. The next thing we heard was the sound of many muffled voices, like you would hear through a wall. By this time we were scared, but went back up. Again, nothing. That night we slept in the same room with her daughter, who was 18 months old, and not at all bothered by anything, it seemed.
The washer continued to be unplugged, the voices began every night at about the same time, the living room developed a 'cold spot', the baby started seeing a man outside the living room window, etc.. It was escalating, so we went to see the owner. When we asked her if anyone had told her anything 'weird' about the house, she said I wondered how long it would be before you heard them'!
We looked into the history of the house, and found it was built by a sea captain who died a natural death in the house. We had the place cleansed by a self-professed 'white witch', but it did no good, so we left. My friend was too afraid for her baby, though nothing sinister ever happened.
