This is a TRUE ghost story that happened to my mother about twenty five years ago. I have retold the full (TRUE) story to the best of my ability!! SO ENJOY!
My mother had been married for a short time when she and her husband came across a very cute little house priced very cheap. They thought their prayers had been answered and bought the house with little consideration. It wasn't long until my mother began to experience strange happenings.
My mother and her (now ex-) husband, both chain smoking chimneys, began to lose pack after pack of cigarettes. They would buy cartons of them and lose every pack after smoking only a few. My mother's ex-husband worked at a bar at night, so she would be left in the house alone until the early hours of the morning. She could only sleep a few hours at a time before whatever it was would wake her up. She would be awoken from a sound sleep by the wrenching of the shower curtain back and forth...when she would go into the bathroom it would cease. The furniture in the basement would scrape across the concrete floor endlessly and she would go to find it completely rearranged. My mother very scared, begged for her husband to stay at home with her at night. He agreed, but after a while he began to stay out late, and even left for days at a time. Because of her fear, she got a large watch dog named Maverick. Maverick would follow her into every room of the house EXCEPT the living room. He would not step foot into that room. In fact, my mother said he could not be dragged into it and would howl if she persisted.
Most of the activity was centered around the living room. My mother said it was like a meat locker in there, she could not get that room to warm up for anything. She also said that she constantly heard the sound of a rocking chair rocking back and forth at all hours, day or night. But she did not even own a rocking chair, especially not in the living room. Footsteps could be heard entering and leaving the living room at around 10 p.m. almost every night. As my mother would sit watching T.V. , it would switch to different channels in the middle of her program. Not only was she terrified, she was annoyed.
Angry and sleep deprived, she decided she would try and move. Her absent-most-of-the-time husband refused. He said they would lose too much money on the house. He began to stay at home, but he too began to experience the phenomenon. Still stubborn, he refused to sell. He told her to deal with it. Soon after they moved in my mother began to hear noises coming from the attic. She had never been up there, and to her knowledge, neither had her husband. She took Maverick up to the attic to investigate. She found a house-full of brand new furniture as well as boxes full of personal belongings. She said it was as if the previous owners had up and moved without their stuff. And that is what happened, they had packed up only what they could fit in a car and left...with no notice and wihtout a trace. My mother found out more about the house after running into a friend who gave her some information on the house.
My mother found that the owners directly before them was a family of four. They had moved very abruptly, and had not notified their jobs or school. They had not even asked that their records be transferred. And nobody knew where they went, NOT EVEN the police because a missing persons report had been filed. She also dug up information about the owner before that. An old woman had owned the house for quite some time. She was nurse at the local hospital and worked the night shift. She usually would leave the house at about 10 p.m. and not be back until dawn. She slept all day...so no one in the neighborhood saw her or paid any attention to her. She became sick (with what we don't know), and was confined to her house. One night she was smoking a cigarrette while watching T.V. She dozed off and the cigarette caught her chair, carpet and clothes on fire. She burned to death in the living room. My mother saw the fire damage in the attic. My mother now knew what caused all the noises and missing cigarrettes, but was unsure why the previous owners left in such a hurry. She did not stick around to find out...she left two days later.
They sold the house to some friends of the family's sons who went to college just a few miles away, and they have reported some similar experiences, but none as bad as my mother. Scary...huh?
