Just down the road.....around the bend,
Stood the general store, for folks withmoney to spend.
A pot bellied stove, a cracker barrel,
A pickle jar and family apparel.
There was sugar,flour and garden seeds;
Penny candy and bright colored beads.
There were colorful bolts of calico,
For all the ladies who loved to sew.
Boxes of tea; coffee to be ground,
And a variety of canned goods wasusually found.
There were hammers and nails..nuts andbolts.
Even halters to fit those frisky young colts.
There was syrup and molasses by thepail,
And plenty of wire when there was hay tobale.
Binder twine, pitch forks....everything onewould need,
When oats, wheat and barley had gone toseed.
Gloves with two thumbs, used for pickingcorn......
One just switched to the second when thefirst became worn.
Scoop shovels,spades, rakes and hoes;
There was always a need for one ofthose.
There was usually a neighbor with a taleto tell,
Who always found time to set a spell.
Cash and carry was the usual creed,
But there was always credit in times ofneed.
Twas the department store of days goneby,
But ever so slowly it began to die.
That general store was a much neededfiend,
Just down the road... around te bend.
