The cost of living nowadays is such a changing thing.
We never know from day to day what bills the mail will bring.
We think we have a decent job and earn a living wage,
But we can never earn enough, in this, the prosperous age!
We're told we live in luxury, our living standards high!
We're told we should have money saved, no matter what we buy!
We're told that life's necessities are easy to afford;
So why's it so expensive to maintain our bed and board?
We buy the things we have to have, we never find that hard,
For money is no problem when we have a credit card!
But soon the dreaded day arrives, the day that makes us quail;
The day of retribution when the bill comes in the mail!
So then we check our bank account for cash as yet unspent,
And now we see we're overdrawn. That wasn't our intent!
How can we extricate ourselves from this financial mess?
We'll get another credit card; our credit's limitless.
And so we start to pay our way with wages yet unearned.
Once more we're free to buy again, no bargain will be spurned.
But soon the creditors descend, insisting that we pay,
And we have reached the hardest part. This is the judgement day!
We take a look at how we've lived, why have we been so rash?
Why have we bought with credit when we should have bought with cash?
The last resort is bankruptcy, so we don't have to pay,
And for a while we're frugal, getting by from day to day.
But then we're told that we're discharged, our slate has been wiped clean,
And we resolve that life will change to what it should have been.
We're in the clear; we're free from debt; the sun's replaced the rain!
We'll get a brand new credit card and start to live again!
