Many times I sit and think about heaven
About that city way up yonder so far
I try to visualize its vast population
And I wonder what my love ones are doing over there.
But when I look up into the heavenly elements
By day I'm covered with a huge blanket of blue
And when night shades fall I'm overshadowed with darkness
Like black curtains with the moon and stars shining through.
But while I'm climbing Jacob's ladder
I'm striving hard to reach the top rail
You see, I've just got to get to that city
I had to think what would happen should I fail.
But I knew that God made a way that is certain
For when He built that city so fair
He made 12 gates to it, Thank God
And we all can enter over there.
Three gates in the north are wide open
Three gates in the south stand ajar
Three gates in the east, three gates in the west all are open
To let us into the judgement bar.
Yes, I'm still climbing Jacob's ladder
Still, I', not quite up to the top
But as each round goes higher and higher
I pray my feet will not slip lest I drop.
For if I look back to count the rounds I've stepped on
The distance will seem twice as long
He said, Forward March O'Christian Soldier
Till the battles fought and the victory is won.
So if you too are wondering about heaven
And you still believe God's love is sustaining
When you reach the top, just ask St. Peter
Ask him how far am I from crowning.
And I believe he'll tell you as he has told the others
Not far just over the milky white way, then
You might say, But I have no passport.
And he'll say 'It's ok by your trials and tribulations you've paid.
For standing right before you will be King Jesus
He'll be making His welcome address
By saying Come unto me all who labored and heavenly laden
Enter now and take your rest.
Then on the streets of gold we'll go walking
When we've changed into our slippers and robes
We'll go out sightseeing in Beaulah
And we'll see John, Elijah and Job
And we may find some of our loved ones
Resting down by the waters so cool
They'll be bathing their tired and weary souls
Over there is yonder's crystal pool.
And I'll see my mother, father, and brothers
And the loved ones I told to wait for me
They said they would, and this they said
You'll find us 'neath the shade of the evergreen tree.
Yes, we'll be praising His name forever
We will have found that heavenly band
We'll rejoice in our blessed Savior
The ne who never lets go of our hand.
Oh my friends where will you be
When the first trumpet call will sound,
Have you enlisted in God's mighty army?
Are you bound for higher ground?
Well if not, you better get in a hurry
You see there is no time to delay
Start Climbing up Jacob's ladder
And tell Satan's lost to get out of your way
