No gifts to brighten up that shabby year,
even a tiny one they could not buy;
A coming winter brought the chill of fear,
yet something tangible kept spirits high.
No tree to brighten up that dreary room,
even a tiny one could not be bought;
there was no way to dissipate the gloom-
yet something gave them strength to bear their lot.
Not even sweets to hold beneath the tongue,
to hide the taste of hunger for awhile;
There was no feast,no pretty wreaths were hung-
yet something fine was constant in their smile.
They made a fool of hunger and dispair
for they were two, and love abided there.
